    How Deep This Blue

This vessel anchored in the bay,
where waves and years roll by,
is my whole life, my joyous day
    beneath the ocean’s sky.

In passing years the deck has worn,
    no sheen glints from the rail;
though all foul weather she has borne,
    still steadfast holds her sail.

The treasures locked inside my mind,
    where life’s fond memories sleep,
are stowed away for me to find,
in a small trunk I keep.

Where happy childhood days still live
    like waves that wash ashore,
how sweet for sands of time to give
some rest for thoughts once more.

How deep this blue on which I dream,
while to the skies I gaze!
What lovely thoughts I now redeem
    in all my twilight days.

Then let the bygone years console
    before they slip from me--
until the mighty waves that roll,
    invite me out to sea.
