Forest of Silence

    Winter skies dip in between tall pine trees.
    Swirling gray-tinted clouds
    search the Bavarian forest’s branches
    with filtering fingers of light.
    Peering out the window,
    we view our own Currier and Ives;
    in the distance, on the hillsides,
    smoke curls from little chimneys.
    Bundled up, we walk the forest trails,
    unsure of where they may take us.
    Now, years later, I remember
    the frozen road fork where you chose
    to take a separate trail.
    Alone, I find that nature’s quiet comfort
    brings forth thoughts of peace—
    Now and then, I still walk through
    my forest in silence.
