Toward Heaven

    In the moonlit night,
    deeper shades of solitude
merge with my thoughts and raise
    a higher awareness within me.
My eyes scan the starry heaven
    with adequate clarity,
    but my mind receives another,
    much greater image.
    In their preordained fixed orbit,
    planets seem to sway
    from glistening cords,
    like baubles suspended from
    a child’s fingers.
    While hop scotching stars frolic
    around the moon's rim,
    angels' silver voices stir,
    filling the firmament with
    utterances I once understood.
    In calm submission
I open up to all the boundless
    celestial beauty above me,
    and with that, I realize--
    I'm farther from heaven now
than I had been as a child.
